I come from a family of nappers. My mom always took "20 minute power naps," my dad took a nap every afternoon when he arrived home from work (he had to be at work at 5am so he was tired!). Every Sunday after church my siblings and I would all sleep for hours.
I go in and out of "nap phases." Sometimes in my life, I've felt too guilty to nap. Right now I don't. Therefore, I am taking one almost everyday, these days. And I love it. There is nothing quite as exciting as anticipating your nap. Then, when the moment finally arrives, and the stars have aligned, you curl up and, smiling, drift off to sleep.
So, let's get down to the "nitty-gritty."
To have a wonderful napping experience, there are a few essential things that must take place.

1. Have a delicious snack just prior to nap time. It is easier to fall asleep when you feel happily full of something yummy.
2. Make sure that all children are engaged in an activity that will keep their attention for a long period of time.
I usually nap for about 45 minutes to an hour. I always nap during Macey's nap because she can't quite be left unattended yet. Another trick that works for me is to not let my children watch very much T.V. most of the time. That way, when I really need them occupied, I can use the T.V. and they become zombies who can't tear their eyes away from the screen and therefore, will not bother me for ANY reason.
Another trick is bribery. Sometimes I tell them that if they let me sleep for 45 minutes without bothering me (unless there is a fire or something) then they will get a special treat when I wake up. This works well for us.
3. Use a face mask to block out light.
I tend to think too much when there is light. My curtains don't block it out enough, so I use this handy little mask. It tricks my brain into thinking it is nighttime.
4. The knee pillow. For ultimate comfort, place a cushy pillow between both knees. I can't sleep without my knee pillow.
5. Use a light weight blanket. And NEVER get under your covers.
If you get under your covers you will never get out. It is just too cozy. It is also just too sweaty. People tend to sweat more during daylight hours. Your nap will NOT be as enjoyable if you wake up sweaty and hot. A baby blanket works perfectly because it gives enough warmth, but not too much.
6. Use a noise machine.
This small electronic will only cost you a few dollars but will greatly add to your napping enjoyment. The one I use imitates the sound of a calming wind. It allows my brain to focus on a low hum and tune out any other background noise (like perhaps screaming children).

7. Last but not least, as you are falling asleep, think of something fun to do, or eat, after your nap. This will help you to get up when the alarm goes off.
Remember, you mustn't sleep for too long during the day. Naps are meant to rejuvenate you, not to make you groggy or throw off your nighttime sleep schedule.

Thank you so much for the tutorial! I am a horrible napper. Whenever I lie down I just think and think of all that needs to be done. Perhaps it is because I don't use the eye mask, noise machine, and lightweight blanket!?!
I'll have to give this a go now that school is out and I'm not running all over the places taking and picking up kids.
Okay I am a closet napper too. Sunday's we take long naps at our house. But I prefer the yummy treat after I wake up for some reason I crave something sweet when I wake up. Also. I'm afraid it I used the darken shades I might never wake up again until the morning. Which could be a problem with 3 unattended boys. But maybe I should try them. I agree about the covers.
Makes me want to take a nap!!ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
I am flattered? Three things: turn off the phone. If husband is not home, turn the thermostat down. If children wake you up unnecessarily, be really grumpy and mean so they learn their lesson. LOVE the detailed instructions. I hope more people learn to embrace the nap.
I have tears in my eyes from crying b/c I was laughing so hard!!! The demonstration pictures about did me in! I wish you lived closer to me so you could make me laugh all the time! I would have a six pack! Thank goodness for blogs though! I can at least be a little bit in touch with you! I know all those tips but Haven does NOT let me nap. I am hopeless! I bribe and it works a little but maybe for 15 minutes. And she can't sit still to watch TV. All she wants to watch is "Maggie and the Ferocious Beast" over and over. That only lasts 20 minutes. Maybe when she is older... I can't wait! :)
oh my goodness i love your blog!!
Very very funny!
My life would fall apart if I did this. When the kids are in school, it would be more feasible, but even then... I'm not much of a napper. Except on Sunday. Mmmm... Love me a Sunday nap.
I'm not much of a napper. I think too much when I lay down. I guess I need to invest in a noise machine and think about something fun to do when I wake up. Thanks for the tips!
Of course, when I was pregnant with A, I napped everyday no matter what was happening around me!
I am laughing so hard right now! Your "how to" pictures are classic. I LOVE naps and haven't been able to enjoy them since my last son was born because he only takes 20-30 min ones and always wakes up crying. I'm going to use some of your techniches on him. I'm a person that needs a lot of sleep, one day I'll join the closet napper crowd. Until then, enjoy your naps, you've earned them!
I love napping, too! I definitely learned from your tutorial, though. My naps are usually disasters most of the time because I end up just yelling for my kids to leave me alone the whole time. I'll have to try some of your strategies.
More importantly, I am going CRAZY with excitement because we have the EXACT SAME COMFORTER from Target!!!!!! I was just preparing a blog about it because I love it so much. Isn't it the cutest? The laminate I emailed you about painting is an armoire that goes in our room. I'm thinking of painting it the blue in the comforter. What do you think?
Mindy, that would be so cute! I love that blue! Please post pics when you're done with it. I am struggling with my room right now because I bought the comforter and I'm having to change every color around to match it.
I thought that was the same comforter! You guys have good taste! Thanks for all the napping tips, I'll have to try some of those. If I'm lucky I can squeeze in a power nap on the couch here and there, but a longer nap would be divine!
Hilarious. I totally agree with the knee pillow. I also need a pillow in my arms. And I need a whole lot more pillows when I'm pregnant.
Those are some great suggestions. What I want to know is who took the pics of you prepping for your great nap ? :)
My roommates named my napping style after me and it is only truly effective when you are really exhausted. Take off real clothes, put on pjs, crawl under blankets and don't come back out until it's dark, or at least dusk :) Does not work for mommy style naps. Thanks for the new tips!
Love it! I think I'll go and try out your tips right now! Sweet dreams to me:)
i cannot stop laughing. i'm serious. i am in tears over here. you have naps down to a science. the looks of the kids faces while they were 'zombies' in front of the tv, priceless!!!!!!!!
i take a nap everyday. i realized what i was doing wrong, i was napping too long and i was under the covers! ouch!! i usually score about 2 hours everyday then when i would wake up i would feel like crying because i'm still tired and DJ's looking at me with a sneaky look on his face. *sigh*
i loved this post.
knee pillows!!!!! LOL stop it now. :)
That is a great list for naps. But you forgot that you need to teach your kids how to work the DVD player in case they need to change out the movie. 45 minutes just isn't enough.
Great napping guide! I will definatly have to put those tips into practice. I especially love the knee pillow:)
Hi, I saw you over at Tanyetta's blog and came over to take a quick read.
Great post! Too bad I can't bring myself to take naps during the day. I think the last time I did was when I was pregnant and that knee pillow was an absolute neccesity then.
Luckily, my two year old still takes a 2.5 hour nap (thanks to Dr. Weissbluth) and that time I use to rejuvenate before the fun starts again.
