Remember the random mantle I had in my garage that I decided to fix up? Well, I am finished.
And guess what? It didn't turn out the way I wanted. But we hung it up anyway. I wanted it just a plain bright white BUT because it was so old and messed up I decided to antique/distress it a little to disguise the damage. The stain I used was too dark and now it is a brownish color that I don't love.
Maybe someday I'll repaint it. But for now I was so ready to be done.
Now I'm having trouble styling it. I like just a couple of large items on a mantle.
BUT I have so many little decor items that I love and that do not have a home in my new house. And I want to use them somewhere! So I put them on the mantle but I don't think I like it. You know that unsettled feeling you have when you walk by a room in your house and it's just not done? That's the feeling I'm getting with this mantle. Maybe too cluttered. I will probably have to change it and find somewhere else for my cute birds, elephant, and bowls to go. But where??
Why is home decorating so hard and nothing turns out like your dreams?
I do like the mantle, don't get my wrong. I think the antiquing turned out nice. I just feel like a bright white against the brick would look more like what I was going for.

Which way is better? Maybe the red bowls/flower is too much.
And here is a fun chair I picked up for $8 at a garage sale! Mack has claimed it as his own and pushes anyone out who tries to sit in it.

I think I agree...I like the arrangement on the mantle without the red accents.
Just a random blog stalker here but I thought I'd throw in my two cents.
I like the second look, minus the bowls. It looks like you were putting away the dishes and got distracted, leaving them on the mantel. But I do like how it turned out! Makes me want to find one for my place!
I love the mantle, I think it turned out super cute! I can't decide which look I like better though... they both are fun, could you change them with season? the brighter display for summer and the cooler colors for fall/winter? or is that just dumb? I love love that little elephant, he is so cute. And that $8 chair is awesome- what a steal!
