So, I saved my money and we bought a light colored sectional which made a dramatic difference. We also had to move the big dark armoire out of there (It now lives in a room with higher ceilings). I painted an old black dresser white and put the tv on it. Then we got a bigger, cozier rug because the purpose of the room is for laying around and that wasn't possible with the rug we had (not soft, sheds).
We also got rid of the flower chair (sometimes I'm a little sad about that one but it went to a good home), and we went with blinds instead of dark curtains hanging against the wall. The blinds made it feel bigger for sure and lightened things up a lot! I changed a few things on the wall and we got two mustard/gold chairs to go on either side of the dresser. Oh and I refinished the top of my coffee table. I had painted it white but it showed too many nicks and scratches. So I stripped just the top and stained it.
I like it so much better now. I don't know if I'm totally done with it, but for now I am.
Sometimes I miss the armoire because I'm a believer in hiding the tv- I hate that it's kindof the focus of the room because we rarely watch it. Someday maybe I'll get a cute cupboard or something for it? But for now, I'm happy with my lighter more airy room- it feels like we have more space, room to lay around (and for Mack to crawl), and even more seating which is fun! Our whole family can sit on the couch! Plus we have two new chairs for even more seating. Obviously it looks a little different right now because of the tree and the mantle decor. I'll post a photo without the Christmas stuff later.

I love it. I feel the same way about my family room. I want to get a lighter sofa too, but I'm afraid of it being dirty all the time. How does it work for you?
I love the changes you made. Such a fun room. I'm a believer in hiding the tv too. Not possible for me now but eventually one day... Can't wait to see you guys. Give your kiddos big hugs from us, especially macey with her birthday this week.

I love your new room! I love so many of the changes - the sectional, the chairs, the tv cabinet, the coffee table, the rug. Where is the rug from?
Also, that survey is such a good idea. Every year we think we give our kids way too much and go overboard. But then we do it again the next year. I think trying to make sure everyone is equal makes our spending grow and grow.
